Maternity Photos at Home. Why Your House Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect
So much of pregnancy happens inside your own four walls. It's the sofa you sink into at the end of a long day with your feet up and a hand resting on your bump, the bedroom where you lie awake feeling those first little kicks, and the corner of the spare room that is slowly becoming a nursery, one tiny vest and flat-pack drawer at a time. Home is where this whole chapter is being lived, so it makes so much sense to remember it there too.
An in-home maternity session lets your story unfold in the place it truly belongs. There's no travelling in your final weeks and no watching the forecast. There are no unfamiliar surroundings to settle into before you can relax. It's just you, the people you love, and the rooms that have held you through every month of waiting.
Why home makes so much sense for maternity photos
Most maternity sessions take place somewhere between 32 and 36 weeks, when your bump is really showing but you're usually still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy yourself. At home, you can kick your shoes off, sit down whenever you need to, and pop the kettle on halfway through without anyone batting an eyelid.
We usually spend around 60 to 90 minutes together, which leaves plenty of time for breaks, loo trips and a sit-down whenever you need one. Being in your own space means there's nothing new to get used to, so it's often much easier to relax. You'll end up curled on the sofa or leaning against your partner in the kitchen, just as you would on any other evening, and it's those ordinary, familiar moments that make the photos feel like you.
Your home doesn’t need a makeover, just a little breathing space
There's no need to repaint the hallway, buy new cushions or give the whole house a top-to-bottom spring clean before I arrive. We'll usually only use a couple of rooms, so all I'd suggest is a tidy of those spaces. Clearing the surfaces, popping the washing basket and the pile of post into another room, and tucking away anything bright or busy that might pull the eye in the background makes a real difference to how calm your photos feel.
It should still feel like your home, with a favourite throw over the sofa or the nursery that's slowly coming together, so the focus stays on you and your bump rather than whatever's sitting on the kitchen side. I'll send over a few simple pointers before we meet, so you'll know exactly what's worth doing and what you can happily leave.
A rental home, and a gallery full of closeness
One mama I photographed had both her maternity and newborn sessions at home, in a house she was renting at the time. I’ll let her tell you how it went.
“Alex was brilliant, it felt like having a friend over for a cuppa and a chat. She was able to capture us in a delicate, beautifully simple way and I will be forever grateful. We had both our maternity and newborn session at home, and despite not loving our house decor (it was a rental), that did not matter at all as Alex focused on us and our closeness. My advice: if you’re shy and feeling like you won’t be able to enjoy a maternity session, or worry that you might not look (or feel) great in that newborn period, Alex is the right photographer for you. Kind and professional at the same time!” IN-HOME MATERNITY & NEWBORN SESSIONS ~ Bruna
If any part of her advice sounds like you, I’d love you to get in touch, even if it’s just to ask a few questions first.
What an in-home maternity session with me feels like
When I arrive, we start slowly. We'll have a drink, catch up, and wander through your home together so I can get a feel for where the light falls and which spaces feel most like you. Some families love the bedroom, others gravitate towards a window seat or a favourite armchair, and many of my favourite images come from moving between a few different rooms as the session flows.
You'll never be left wondering what to do with your hands or where to look. I guide you through simple, natural prompts that help you connect, whether that's with your partner, an older sibling who is about to become a big brother or sister, or simply with your bump. If you'd like something special to wear, you're welcome to choose from my client wardrobe of beautiful maternity dresses. There's more on choosing outfits in Building a Wardrobe That Tells Your Family's Story.
From bump to newborn, in the same four walls
Lots of families choose to have their maternity session and their newborn session at home, and there's something really special about seeing the two galleries side by side. The armchair where you sat with your hands wrapped around your bump becomes the chair where you feed your baby a few weeks later. The nursery that was half-built in your maternity photos is finished, and someone small is asleep in it.
If you'd love both, it's worth getting in touch around your 20-week scan so we can pop your maternity date in the diary and hold space for your newborn session around 2 weeks from your due date. Home isn't the only option either. If you're dreaming of open fields and golden hour, outdoor maternity sessions are just as lovely, and we can always talk through which feels right for you.
In-home maternity photographer in Worcestershire and beyond
As an in-home and outdoor maternity photographer in Worcestershire, I travel to families' homes throughout Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds, and further afield too, so wherever you're settled right now, your home can be the backdrop for this chapter of your story. You can find out more about what's included in a theUNTOLDphoto maternity session on my maternity page. If you're still deciding whether a maternity session is for you, Why Maternity Photos Are Rarely About the Bump is a lovely place to start.
Not long from now, your home will be full of night feeds, tiny socks drying on the radiator and a whole new rhythm to your days. Before all of that arrives, there's something really special about pausing in the rooms where you've spent these months waiting, and keeping hold of how this time felt. Whenever you're ready, whether that's next week or a little further down the line, I'd love to hear about the home your little one is about to arrive in.
