How to Look Natural in Photos (You Won't Even Be Thinking About It)

Twenty minutes into a session, something almost always happens. A shoulder drops. A laugh slips out before anyone's ready for it. Someone stops checking where their hands are. It happens so quietly that most people don't notice the exact moment it occurs, only that at some point they stopped thinking about the camera altogether.

I want to say this clearly, right at the start, because I know how much this worry can sit with people before a session. You don't need to know how to look natural. That was never something you needed to bring with you.

Why This Worry Is So Common

Nobody teaches us how to exist comfortably in front of a lens. Most of what we know about being photographed comes from school photo days, stiff group shots at weddings, or the particular awkwardness of someone shouting "say cheese" while you try to arrange your face into something that feels like a smile but reads like a grimace.

So it makes complete sense that the idea of an entire session, a whole hour or two of being photographed, feels daunting. You imagine yourself holding a pose, unsure what to do with your hands, watching the camera instead of living your life. If that's what you've pictured, I understand exactly why you've been putting off booking.

That isn't how a session with me works, and it never has been.

How the Session Actually Unfolds

There's no moment where I ask you to stand a certain way, tilt your chin, or hold a smile until it stops feeling like your own. Instead, we simply spend time together. We talk. We wander into whatever room, garden or field feels right for that day. I follow you rather than the other way round, and somewhere in that time, something shifts.

Somewhere in that hour, you stop clocking where the camera is at all.

That's not something I promise lightly. It's what happens, again and again, when a session is built around presence instead of performance. The tickle fight that breaks out because a toddler is simply being a toddler. The quiet look between you and your partner when neither of you thinks anyone's watching. The way your shoulders drop once you stop bracing for the shutter and start just being where you are.

Why “Natural” Isn’t Really About Your Face at All

Here's the part that surprises people most. These photos were never about how you look. They're about how it felt.

Years from now, you won't remember whether your hair was perfectly in place or whether you were mid sentence when I pressed the shutter. You'll remember the way your child was tucked into your side, or the way your partner's hand found yours without either of you thinking about it. Those small, unguarded things are what you're actually paying for, whether you realise it yet or not.

The Session That Changed a Client’s Mind

A mum got in touch with me last year, certain she'd end up hating every image because she "wasn't a natural photos person." She'd avoided cameras for years, always the one taking the picture rather than in it. By the end of our time together, she barely remembered I'd been there at all.

I genuinely forgot you were even there half the time, she told me afterwards, half laughing at herself for how nervous she'd been beforehand.

Her gallery ended up full of the version of her that only exists when nobody is trying to look a certain way. That's the version worth keeping.

A Few Small Things That Help (But Aren’t Essential)

The natural feeling really does come from how a session is run rather than anything you need to do, though there are a few gentle things that can help you settle in faster.

  • It's worth putting some thought into what you wear. Not dressed up exactly, just something that feels slightly more considered than your everyday. If you're not sure where to start, I'll send you wardrobe guidance beforehand, and there's a client closet you're welcome to borrow from too. It's a lovely chance to put something on that makes you feel like yourself again, maybe for the first time in a while.

  • Give yourself a little longer than you think you'll need to get ready, so you're not arriving flustered.

  • If you're bringing children or pets along, don't worry about controlling them. Some of my favourite images come from the chaos nobody planned for.

  • If you're still nervous, tell me. Genuinely. Half of my job is simply making space for you to stop worrying about the other half.

Wherever You're Based, This Works the Same Way

Whether we're in your home in Worcester, out in the Herefordshire countryside, or somewhere tucked away in The Cotswolds, the approach doesn't change. It was never about the location looking a certain way. It's about you feeling comfortable enough in it to forget I'm even there.

If you've been putting off booking because the thought of being photographed makes you want to hide, that hesitation makes complete sense to me. By the time we're twenty minutes in, you won't be thinking about the camera at all. You'll just be living your ordinary, beautiful, real life, and I'll quietly be there to capture it as it happens.
