The Wait, and What It Feels Like to Open Your Gallery
The camera goes back in its bag and I say my goodbyes, whether we've spent the last hour in your living room or out chasing golden hour somewhere. Then comes the waiting, and eventually, the moment your gallery finally arrives.
So here's what that time actually feels like, from the last click of the shutter to opening your gallery for the first time.
The Wait
There's an odd little gap between a session ending and your gallery arriving. You know the photos exist, you just haven't seen them yet.
You might find yourself playing the shoot back in your head, wondering which shots I actually captured, the ones you noticed at the time and the ones you didn't. Or you might try not to think about it at all, and then find yourself checking your inbox anyway, just in case.
However you spend that time, know that it isn't wasted on my end. Your gallery is being built with real care, not left to sit, and it'll be worth the wait.
The Day Your Gallery Lands
Then it's there. A link to your own private online gallery, sitting in your inbox, ready whenever you are.
For a lot of families, that moment carries a little flutter of excitement, the same kind you get opening a parcel you've been waiting for, except this one holds your own family, your own story. And it deserves more than a quick scroll between other things.
This is an investment in memories you'll have forever, so it's worth treating the moment like one. Put the phone down for a minute, or better yet, wait until you can sit properly with whoever's part of this story, get comfortable, and open it together.
What It’s Actually Like to Open It
This is my favourite part of it all. I don't even need to see it happen, a message afterwards is enough.
‘They literally brought tears to my eyes as I relived those beautiful moments.’
Messages like that land in my inbox more often than you'd think. You weren't just seeing photographs. You were being handed back a moment you were too busy living to notice properly the first time round. One family wrote to me afterwards:
“Oh my godddddddd!!!! They are so perfect omg. She looks so bloody cute I cannot cope. You are just amazing. She looks so different and so small, so glad we did it at 2 weeks so we can look back on her that little. It’s so precious. THANK YOU as always, it means the world.” — IN-HOME NEWBORN SESSION ~ HOLLY, WILL & ADELINA
Another family, photographed outdoors on a golden afternoon/evening, wrote to say:

That's what a gallery reveal actually looks like, more often than not. Not a big staged unveiling, just a kitchen table or a sofa, and a family taking their time over every single image, going back to the ones that catch them off guard, rather than rushing through to see what's there.
Turning Photos Into Something You Can Hold
Your gallery is yours to keep and revisit as often as you like, but I'd always encourage families to think beyond the screen too. There's something different about holding a printed image, about a frame on the wall your child walks past every single day without quite realising it's them, or an album that gets pulled out and pored over on a rainy afternoon years from now.
Digital galleries are wonderful for sharing and reliving a moment quickly, but prints and albums are the ones that get handed down. A screen is easy to scroll past. A framed print on the wall, or an album left out on the coffee table, gets looked at properly, again and again, by people who might otherwise never see it.
It doesn't need to be complicated. Choose one favourite and have it printed to sit on a shelf. Put a handful into a simple album that lives somewhere the whole family can reach it, not tucked away in a cupboard. Or go bigger, a piece of wall art in the hallway that catches your eye every time you walk past, long after you've stopped consciously thinking about the day it was taken.
That's not to say you need to decide on any of this straight away. There's no timeline, no pressure. Your gallery will still be there whenever you're ready to turn it into something more.
Wherever You Are Right Now
Maybe your gallery hasn't landed yet, and you're in that odd in-between stretch, replaying the session in your head. Maybe you've already had that moment of opening yours and know exactly what I mean. Or maybe you haven't booked a session at all yet, and you're simply curious what it would feel like to have a gallery like this waiting for you one day.
Wherever you are, that feeling is worth holding onto, and when your own gallery does land, I hope it feels like being handed something you didn't know you'd need until it was in your hands.
