It’s something many parents quietly worry about before a session…
“What if they don’t sit still?”
“What if they’re too loud?”
“What if it feels chaotic?”
But after photographing hundreds of families, I can tell you this with complete honesty:
Perfectly behaved children don’t create the memories you’ll want to keep.
The Session That Said It All
During my most recent Motherhood Minis, a mama messaged me later that evening to apologise.
She described her children as “feral… like sheep that had gotten out of their pen.”
And I smiled instantly.
Because I had just spent 20 minutes with her family… and I had loved every second of it.
The Beauty Inside the Chaos
Yes, they were wild.
There was running.
There was noise.
There was endless energy that filled every second of the session.
But there was also something else, woven quietly between it all:
Laughter that felt completely unfiltered
Moments of connection that couldn’t be planned
Little glances and touches that happened naturally, without direction
It was a whirlwind.
But it was real.
Why “Perfect” Doesn’t Feel Like You
If those children had sat perfectly still…
Hands folded neatly.
Smiling on cue.
Doing everything “right.”
The images may have looked calm.
They may have appeared “well behaved.”
But they wouldn’t have felt like them.
And that’s the difference that matters.
Because children recognise themselves in photographs that reflect who they truly are — not who they were asked to be for a moment.
